Thoughts of Mary

When our kids were young, I collected this set. It really is my favorite Nativity. I think because it reminds me of all of the church Christmas pageants our family got to be apart of then.

I am going to be writing a blog for 24 days. Pom Pom thought it might be nice if we did this together. If you would like to join in too, here is a link to her blog. Pom Pom’s Ponderings.

I would like my first blog to be about Mary. A young girl who said yes to God. I was thinking of where to begin and what popped into my head that song called “Mary Did You Know?”

Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered, will soon deliver you
Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God
Mary did you know? Mary did you know? Mary did you know?
Mary did you know? Mary did you know? Mary did you know?
The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb
Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven’s perfect lamb?
That sleeping child you’re holding is the great I am
Mary did you know? Mary did you know? Mary did you know?
Mary did you know? Mary did you know? Mary did you know? Oh
Mary did you know?

I can’t ever read those words without crying. To think about each line makes me think of that young girl who could have been as young as 14 being a new Mother to the son of God just boggles my mind. I know that this last month, holding my newest grandson brought my heart to its knees. All babies are gifts from heaven, but being the age I am now and having the joy of watching our babies grow up into adults with families of their own has been such a wonderful experience and gift. To watch each one embrace life. To see them make unique choices of their own is a growing experience for me. Letting go. Letting God be God. Watching Him call them all in different directions. Having to stand back.

How often I wonder did Mary want to say No, Lord not that? Things I think about. Having our family going in all kind of directions this year has been a test I never dreamed of or ever thought of, but seeing God working in their lives, I wouldn’t have wanted to miss. So like Mary, I find myself saying:
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Wishing it was easier in my heart as it seemed to me to be easy for her.

Thank you for visiting today, as I ponder what Christmas really is about, not boxes and bows, but the idea of being a servant to God as that young girl was who changed the whole world by saying Yes to God.

Then Mary said, Behold, I am the handmaiden of the Lord; let it be done to me according to what you have said. And the angel left her.
